Jiri Mestecky M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of Microbiology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL, U.S.A., and professor of Immunology and Microbiology, the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. He obtained his medical degree in 1964 from the Faculty of General Medicine, Charles University in Prague and after his graduation worked at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Institute of Microbiology in Prague as a graduate student under the guidance of Prof. Šterzl, M.D., Dr. Sc. in the Division of Immunology. In 1967 he left the Czech Republic for the United States where he continues to work on various aspects of mucosal immunology. In 1969 he was promoted to Assistant Professor, in 1972 to Associate Professor and in 1976 to Professor of Microbiology and a year later to Professor of Medicine. In 1976, he spent his sabbatical with Prof. Henry Kunkel at the Rockerfeller University in New York, and in 1983 at the Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan.

He is a member of the American Association of Immunologists, American Society of Microbiology, American Society of Investigative Pathology, New York Academy of Sciences, American Society for Clinical Investigation, Mucosal Immunology Society (its first president for 3 years), American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Clinical Immunology Society, and International Society for Reproductive Immunology.

Honors include an honorary membership in the Czecho-Slovak Immunological Society (1992), Scandinavian Society for Immunology (2002), International Association for Dental Research (2007), elected membership in the “Learned Society of the Czech Republic”, Association of American Physicians, honorary doctorates of Odontology (Denmark) and Medicine (Sweden), medals of “Jan Evangelista Purkynĕ-“Pro merito”, from Prague and Brno (1992), “Gregor Johann Mendel for Biological Sciences”, Academy of Sciences Czech Republic (1996), “Garnet Immunoglobulin” from Czech Immunological Society (2006), Niels Alwal medal and award for “Pioneers in Nephrology and Dialysis”, Sweden (2007), and prize “Patria” Czech Mind (2007).
He has served on Editorial Boards of the Journal of Immunology, Immunochemistry-Molecular Immunology, Infection and Immunity, Journal of Clinical Immunology, Clinical and Developmental Immunology, Mucosal Immunology, International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, and Oral Microbiology and Immunology. He is an author/co-author on 534 experimental papers, reviews, book chapters, and has served as an author/editor/co-editor of 14 books dealing with Mucosal Immunology.
